HDFC credit card devaluation 2026: Is Infinia still worth ₹12,500?

HDFC Infinia still worth it? ₹12,500 annual fee in 2026, before and after the devaluation

Changes checked in October 2026 against HDFC’s own notices and card terms.

If you hold an Infinia, you’ve probably seen the headlines by now. Another HDFC credit card devaluation, another round of “is it over for Infinia?” posts in your feed.

Most of those posts skip one thing, though. Your points still earn the same. They’re still worth ₹1 each on SmartBuy flights and hotels. What changed is mostly around the edges, plus one big new rule about who gets to keep the card.

So we did what we always do. We put every change since July 2025 in one table, ran the maths at three spend levels, and wrote down who should keep Infinia and who should think again.

Key takeaways

The rewards engine is intact. 5 points per ₹150, up to 10X on SmartBuy and ₹1 a point on travel are all unchanged.

The big change is about keeping the card. From April 2026, you need ₹18 lakh of annual spend or a ₹50 lakh relationship value with HDFC.

Voucher buyers feel it most. SmartBuy vouchers now earn at most 3,000 bonus points a month. Spend ₹50,000 a month on vouchers and that’s about 3,670 points (roughly ₹3,670) less each month.

Infinia skipped May’s per-₹200 cut. Regalia Gold, Diners Privilege and BizPower took it. Infinia didn’t.

At ₹1.5 lakh a month, you’re right on the line. Spend a little less and you’ll need the relationship value route instead.

Every HDFC Infinia change, in one table

HDFC changed five things on Infinia between July 2025 and July 2026. Most holders will only really notice one of them: the new rule for keeping the card.

The big one: ₹18 lakh or ₹50 lakh to keep the card

This is the change everyone’s talking about, and for good reason. From 1 April 2026, HDFC checks each financial year whether you’ve done one of two things:

  • Spent ₹18 lakh on the card (primary and add-on cards together), or
  • Kept an average of ₹50 lakh across your HDFC savings, current and deposit accounts.

You only need one. The first window runs from April 2026 to March 2027, so most holders won’t be reviewed before then.

Notice what this isn’t. It isn’t a cut to your rewards. It’s HDFC deciding that Infinia is for its biggest customers, and drawing a line to prove it.

SmartBuy vouchers now have their own 3,000-point cap

Brand vouchers on SmartBuy earn 5X. Until July 2026, they shared the overall 15,000 bonus-point cap with everything else, which meant you could earn the whole lot through vouchers if you wanted to.

Not anymore. Vouchers now max out at 3,000 bonus points a month. That works out to ₹22,500 of voucher spend. Anything above that still earns, just at the base 5 points per ₹150. Hold an Amex card too? Its voucher platform has a much higher ceiling, at 25,000 bonus points a month. Here’s how Amex ShopWise works.

Insurance points capped at 10,000 a month

Insurance still earns points on Infinia, which is more than most cards can say. Since July 2025, though, it tops out at 10,000 points a month. You’d need to put about ₹3 lakh of premiums on the card in a single month to hit that, so most people never will.

Smaller fee changes

These came in on 1 July 2025 and apply across HDFC cards, not just Infinia:

  • Wallet loads: 1% on the whole month’s loads once they cross ₹10,000
  • Online skill gaming: 1% on the whole month’s spend once it crosses ₹10,000, and no points
  • Utility bills: 1% on the whole month’s utility spend once it crosses ₹50,000
  • Each fee is capped at ₹4,999 a month

Then on 15 May 2026, HDFC added a 1.75% markup whenever you pay in rupees abroad, or pay a foreign-registered merchant in India. Infinia Metal cards also now cost ₹3,500 to reissue if lost or damaged.

If you don’t load wallets, pay big utility bills or pay in rupees abroad on the card, you can skip this part.

What didn’t change

HDFC Infinia’s earn rate, SmartBuy multipliers, ₹1 point value, transfer ratios and lounge access all stayed exactly the same through 2026.

That’s worth saying out loud, because it’s the opposite of what happened to other HDFC cards. On 15 May 2026, HDFC moved several cards from earning per ₹150 to earning per ₹200. HDFC’s own notice listed Infinia, Infinia Metal and Diners Black among the cards that weren’t touched.

So the things that make Infinia worth holding are all still there:

  • 5 reward points per ₹150, in India and abroad
  • 10X on SmartBuy hotels and 5X on flights and vouchers, with a 15,000 bonus-point monthly cap
  • ₹1 a point on SmartBuy flights and hotels
  • 22 airline and hotel transfer partners at the same 1:1 and 2:1 ratios
  • Unlimited lounge access for you and your add-on cardholders

HDFC credit card devaluation 2026: The other cards

The 2026 HDFC credit card devaluation hit Regalia Gold, Diners Club Privilege and BizPower harder than Infinia, with lower earn rates and spend-linked lounges.

If one of these is your second HDFC card, it’s worth checking where your spends go. Infinia now earns noticeably more per rupee than either of the first two.

What the devaluation actually costs you

For most Infinia holders, the 2026 changes cost nothing in rewards. The real question is whether you clear ₹18 lakh, and whether you rely on SmartBuy vouchers.

We’ve valued points at ₹1 each (what they’re worth on SmartBuy travel), counted base points only, and assumed the fee is waived once you cross ₹10 lakh a year.

At ₹1 lakh a month (₹12 lakh a year)

You earn about 40,000 base points, so roughly ₹40,000 of travel. Your annual fee is waived too, since you’re over ₹10 lakh.

The catch? You’re ₹6 lakh short of the spend rule. So you either keep ₹50 lakh with HDFC, or find another ₹50,000 a month to put on the card. If neither works for you, the card is at risk at the 2027 review, even though it’s paying you well.

At ₹1.5 lakh a month (₹18 lakh a year)

You’re exactly on the line. 60,000 base points, roughly ₹60,000 of travel, fee waived.

Our only advice here: don’t cut it fine. A couple of quiet months, a refund or two, and you could end up just short. Aim a little above ₹18 lakh.

At ₹3 lakh a month

You clear the spend rule easily and earn about 1,20,000 base points a year. The only 2026 change you might notice is the voucher cap, and only if you buy a lot of vouchers.

Person A vs Person B

Two people, both spending ₹1.5 lakh a month on Infinia. Both put ₹50,000 of it through SmartBuy.

Person A buys ₹50,000 of brand vouchers every month. Before July 2026, that earned about 6,670 bonus points. Now it earns 3,000. That’s about 3,670 points a month, or close to ₹44,000 a year, gone.

Person B books ₹50,000 of hotels on SmartBuy instead, at 10X. That earns about 15,000 bonus points, the full monthly cap, same as before. Nothing lost.

Same card. Same spend. The only difference is where the ₹50,000 went.

Tip to make your PointsFly: if vouchers were how you hit your SmartBuy cap, switch some of that spend to hotel bookings. They earn twice the rate and aren’t affected by the new voucher cap.

What happens if you miss ₹18 lakh?

HDFC hasn’t said exactly what happens if you miss both the ₹18 lakh spend and the ₹50 lakh relationship value. The first review is expected around April 2027.

What we know so far, from HDFC’s communication and cardholder reports:

  • Cardholders who fall short may be downgraded or moved off the Infinia programme.
  • Some cardholders with low spend were asked to put about ₹3 lakh on the card within two months, before the new financial year started.
  • Cardholders have speculated about a move to Diners Club Black Metal or Regalia Gold, but HDFC hasn’t named any downgrade card.

Our take: treat April 2027 as your deadline, and track your spend from now. You have the whole financial year to get there.

Is HDFC Infinia still worth ₹12,500?

For most people who hold it, yes. Infinia still pays ₹1 a point on travel, still earns 3.33% on everyday spends, and its fee is waived above ₹10 lakh a year.

Keep it if…

  • You spend ₹1.5 lakh or more a month, or keep ₹50 lakh with HDFC
  • You book flights and hotels through SmartBuy
  • You redeem for travel or transfer to airlines, instead of taking statement credit
  • You use the lounge access for your family on add-on cards

Rethink it if…

  • Your spends sit well below ₹1.5 lakh a month and you don’t bank heavily with HDFC
  • Most of your SmartBuy earning came from vouchers
  • You’d mostly take statement credit at ₹0.30 a point

If you’re in the second group, you don’t need to rush. You have until the 2027 review. Use that time to move more spends onto the card, or to compare what a card without a spend rule would give you.

Where your value quietly leaks

Funny thing is, most of the value people lose on Infinia has nothing to do with HDFC’s changes. It comes from small habits.

  • Buying vouchers past ₹22,500 a month. Anything above that earns the base rate, not 5X.
  • Paying big premiums in one go. Insurance points stop at 10,000 a month. Spread large premiums over two months if you can.
  • Loading wallets. Over ₹10,000 a month, you pay 1% on the whole amount, and wallet loads earn no points.
  • Paying in rupees abroad. When a foreign shop or website offers to charge you in INR, say no. Since May 2026, HDFC adds a 1.75% markup on top of the merchant’s own exchange rate, which is rarely a good one. Paying in the local currency almost always works out cheaper.
  • Taking statement credit. At ₹0.30 a point, it’s the most expensive way to use what you’ve earned.

Let PointsFly do the tracking

Working out which spends still earn the most, and whether you’ll clear ₹18 lakh, is a lot of tracking. Most people give up and just swipe.

That’s the part we do. PointsFly tracks what your Infinia earns, shows you where each rupee earns best, and finds the redemption that gets the most out of your points. You decide with real numbers in front of you.

The changes come from HDFC’s notices and card terms, read in October 2026, cross-checked with CardExpert and SaveSage reporting on the April 2026 rule. Point values assume ₹1 a point on SmartBuy travel. Voucher maths uses the 5X rate (25 points per ₹150, 20 of them bonus).

Something like this works: “PointsFly estimates that an Infinia holder buying ₹50,000 of SmartBuy vouchers a month earns about 3,670 fewer points a month after the July 2026 voucher cap.”

All we ask is a link back. We update these numbers whenever HDFC changes the card.
